Mariner Studio Update: Smoother Navigation & Better Connectivity

October 23, 2025

We’ve been hard at work improving Mariner Studio Android to make your time on the water more productive and connected. Today, we’re excited to share two important fixes that enhance the core navigation and communication features you rely on.

🗺️ Weather Favorites Now Navigate Smoothly

If you’ve been saving your favorite weather stations for quick access, you may have noticed the app would crash when tapping on a saved location. We’ve completely resolved this issue! Now when you tap on any weather favorite, the app smoothly navigates to the weather details view with all your wind, wave, and forecast data right where you expect it.

What this means for you: Your saved weather spots along your regular routes are now instantly accessible without any hiccups. Perfect for checking conditions at that tricky inlet or your home marina before heading out.

📞 Calling Marina & Facility Contacts Just Got Easier

Here’s where things get interesting. Many of you noticed that the phone button on Nav Unit details pages wasn’t working. As we dug into this, we discovered the issue ran deeper than expected—and the fix actually made the feature much better than before.

The Problem: Our database contains information on over 24,000 maritime facilities across US waterways. Phone numbers for these facilities aren’t always stored in obvious places—sometimes they’re embedded in operational notes, access descriptions, or owner information. The app was only searching a few fields, missing thousands of contact numbers.

The Solution: We expanded the phone number extraction system to search additional database fields including highway access notes and railway notes (yes, maritime facilities often include transportation contact info!). We also improved the phone number detection to recognize more formats—whether it’s formatted as (617) 555-1234, 617-555-1234, or even with country codes.

The Technical Bit: We also fixed an Android 11+ compatibility issue with the dialer intent that was preventing the phone app from launching even when numbers were found.

What this means for you: When you’re at a fuel dock, need to call ahead to a marina, or want to check with a harbor master, that green phone button is now far more likely to have a working number for you. Just tap, and your phone’s dialer opens ready to connect.

🔧 Under the Hood

For the technically curious among our users:

  • Enhanced regex pattern matching for North American phone formats
  • Extended database queries to include HIGHWAY_NOTE and RAILWAY_NOTE fields
  • Added Android package visibility declarations for modern OS compatibility
  • Improved navigation flow for weather station data

What’s Next?

We’re continuing to refine the maritime navigation experience. If you encounter any issues or have suggestions for features you’d like to see, don’t hesitate to reach out using the feedback button in the app.

Fair winds and following seas,
